I had so much fun with this track. The lyrics are very straight forward. “17 miles up ahead” is a direct reference to the 17 mile road on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming.

My heart behind this track was simply to sing about what life can look like for a native on the Wind River Rez. A little tobacco in my lungs driving to the local 24 hour casino at midnight. Doesn’t get much more reservation living than that.

The genre is something very dear to my heart also. Some of my vocal influences stemmed from folks like Jim Morrison and Robert Plante with the screeches and reverberating hums. Naturally, I went with more of a native influence by using a few war cries. The arrangement and feel of the song was definitely influenced by one of my all time favorite bands, “The Black Angels”. I have always wanted to paint reservation life in this kind of indie rock n’ roll style. It is a song that I imagined a young man driving his truck through the Rez would be listening to.
